The American Exchange Project

“The process of building America's first national domestic exchange program.”

The American Exchange Project is a new nonprofit that is in the process of building America's first national domestic exchange program. In an effort to unite the country, AEP sends recently graduated seniors on trips to communities that are politically and socio-economically different from their own; a student from Dodge City, KS or Lemmon, SD might spend a week in New York City or San Diego, while kids from Darien or Cleveland might go to Lake Charles, LA or Kilgore, TX. The organization was established in 2019, and its founding Board members include Paul Solman (Economics Correspondent, PBS NewsHour), Robert Glauber (Professor, Harvard Business School), Akhil Amar (Sterling Professor, Yale Law School), Johnathan Fanton (President, MacArthur Foundation), Arlie Hochschild (Professor, Cal Berkeley), and Robert Putnam (Professor, Harvard). Last summer, twenty students from California, Massachusetts, Texas, and Louisiana traveled on AEP's pilot exchange. This year, over 200 students from thirty-nine towns in twenty-four states have signed up to go on exchanges. To learn more about AEP, please visit: www.americanexchangeproject.org
